(101.7 x 129.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouched, craquelure. N.B. The lot is accompanied by a handwritten letter from Hope to "Dearest," dated April 20, 1867, which references Forest Glen. Hope writes "(he is) going to send (his) 'Forest Glen' to Chicago, for exhibition in the Crosby Art Gallery" and explains the favorable terms the gallery offered him to procure the piece. The lot also includes The Hope Paintings, by Larry Freeman, 1961, where the piece is referenced and reproduced on pages 78, 79, and 89. While on exhibit, the New York Times hailed Forest Glen as "one of the chef d'oeuvres of American art.".
