signed in monogram lower right J.A. oil on canvas Asselijn, like many of his Dutch contemporaries, traveled to Rome in 1635 where he became a member of the Schildersbent. According to Houbraken, his nick-name was ``Krabbetje'', or little crab, alluding to his crippled left hand. While in Italy, Asselijn painted scenes from daily life set outdoors or in rocky grottoes. He was able to capture and put onto canvas the warm Mediterranean sunlight that surely inspired him and his northern colleagues. The present painting can be tentatively dated to circa 1650 (see Exhibited below) based on its subtle coloring and soft brushstrokes.
