NOTE

At the turn of the century Paris was the center of new developments in art and the city where impressionism, fauvism, and later cubism, originated. Curious of these new developments Jan Sluijters visited Paris several times between 1905 and 1911. In 1908 a new movement emerged in the Netherlands, Amsterdam Luminism, of which Mondrian, Toorop, Sluijters and Gestel were the leading figures.
The Luminists strove for an intuitively experienced atmosphere in their work, in which the perception of light was the most important. Sluijters was especially inspired by summer landscapes in which he could catch the radiance of the sun. Painted circa 1910, Landscape near Laren is a fine example the artists Luminist style. The broad strokes and the importance of the colours white and yellow in the light, also relate to the work of van Gogh and van Dongen to which Sluijters was introduced at the Salon des Independants, during his stay in Paris 1906. Sluijters combined the expressive strokes and colours and this radiant landscape.
