From 1903 on Jan Toorop spent many summers in Domburg, a coastal village in Zeeland which was very en vogue at the beginning of the 20th century. Many artists came to Zeeland like Piet Mondriaan and Jacoba van Heemskerck. Between 1904 and 1907 Toorop executed several large colour crayon drawings of farmers, often working in the fields, with Domburg in the distance.
