Lot 73: JAPANESE BRASS BOUND LACQUERED COFFER.
December 10, 2016
St. Louis, MO, USALive Auction
JAPANESE BRASS BOUND LACQUERED COFFER.
Early 20th century. Elaborate gilt foliate designs to the gold flock lacquer finish. Additional matching foliate engraved designs to the gilt metal mounts. Comes with a red cloth cover bearing several tokugawa emblems. 17"h. 25"w. 17"d.
The piece is structurally sound, with some very minor age cracking, with one small age crack visible on the inside lid to one of the long side panels, and that crack is NOT visible on the exterior. There is some minor lacquer chipping to the lower edge of the lid, and the same to the upper rim of the body in a few places. On the gilt metal corner mounts of the lid, a majority of the nails holding them in place go through and those points are felt on the inside of the lid. And on the body, only the large front plate running down the middle of the front panel, has a few nails, near the bottom, that are felt 'through' in the same manor, with that issue not occuring anywhere else on the body.
