NOTE

After the sudden death of the Duc d'Orléans, Louis-Philippe decided to build a chapel in his honor, designed by Fontaine. Ingres was commissioned to provide cartoons for seventeen stained glass windows representing the patron saints of the royal family. The windows were executed at Sèvres, under the supervision of Ingres. The present drawing is the preparatory study for the figure of St. Philip, which, with that of St. Louis, was the first to be finished, they being the protectors of the King. As was his habit, Ingres began with a study of the figure from the nude model, adding a toga in the final design and changing the book to a scroll for historical verisimilitude. The cartoon is in the Louvre (inv. 20324). The window was finished on 6 October 1842 and the chapel dedicated on 11 July 1843.

Like many of Ingres' preparatory drawings, this was in the collection of his friend, Edouard Gatteaux. It was presumed lost with much of his collection in the Commune.
