HOMME NU, AU CEINTURON (A MALE NUDE WITH BUCKLE AND SWORD)
measurements note
29cm., 11 3/8 in.
with the red pastille inscribed: ERNEST MEISSONIER MBRE DE L'INSTITUT / AETATIS / SUAE / LXX / V / J. C. CHAPLAIN.
NOTE
Meissonier's sculptures have a remarkable spontaneity which result from their primary role as preparatory studies for his paintings. A few were cast by Siot-Decauville but this example was probably made under the artist's supervision. It has the pastille with his profile portrait by Jules Clement Chaplain (1839-1909), official medallist of the French Government. The original wax Homme nu, au ceinturon is in Grenoble.
