Description: THE TRAVELS OF SEVERAL LEARNED MISSIONERS OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS, INTO DIVERS PARTS OF THE ARCHIPELAGO, INDIA, CHINA, AND AMERICA. London: R. Gosling, 1714. 8vo. [16], 335, [17] pp., + one (of two) folding plates, the final two leaves being ads. 19th c. green 1/4 morocco over decorative cloth, housed in clamshell case. Some light rubbing to front hinge and spine ends, bookplate of John Carter Brown (library) with release stamp and red ink-stamp to preface leaf, title with 19th c. ink markings, folding plate with repair to verso (along fold, some loss), otherwise a clean copy overall with mild age-tone and only light and occasional foxing. Very Good. ****************************** First edition in English (translated and abridged from the French.) "This volume contains twenty-two letters, the nineteenth relating to the Moxos, in South America, the twentieth being Marest’s Account of Affairs at Hudson’s Bay, and the twenty-first, Extract of an Account of the Country of Accadie in North America, etc., written by a French gentleman, and sent to a Missioner of the Society of Jesus" (Sabin.)
