NOTE

Rue Notre Dame, Paris is an exceptional picture from Jongkind's production of the 1860s. It was painted the year after the artist participated in the Paris Salon at the Palais des Industries. Jongkind had been so taken by the charm of the French capital that he returned the following October to paint this scene. The style of the picture, with its brightly colored palette and nearly imperceptible dabs of paint, recalls the paintings of Corot and those of the Barbizon school.

On a map by Baedeker of Paris dating from 1867, the Rue Notre-Dame is called the Rue Vieille Notre Dame. According to this map, the street went from the Rue Monge to the Rue du Pont des Biches. In the present work, the distant view depicts the Place Scipion.
