Description: The love letter, watercolor on paper, 48 cm x 32 cm passepartout, dated lower right 1903 and signed Johan M Ten Kate; At the age of 19, Ten Kate moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until 1871. In 1852 he became a member of the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Arts. During his life he traveled to France, England and Italy and also lived in Dutch-India for some time. The works of Katherine Kates represent a romanticized reality which did not coincide with the mostly harsh and poor reality of the peasants of this time.
