New Orleans, LA, USALive Auction
Description: John J. Korver (American/Louisiana, 1910-1988), "Steamboat with Bales of Cotton, Port of New Orleans", watercolor on paper, signed lower right, sheet 23 in. x 30 in., framed. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Eleanor M. Worsley, Natchitoches, LA. Note: John Korver, born in Indonesia, immigrated in the 1950s to America where he settled in Baton Rouge and served as a professor at Louisiana State University. His career as a graphic artist brought a straightforward view and steady, sure draftsmanship to his compositions. Korver is most known for his maritime scenes and works based around the rural bayous of Louisiana. In the work offered here, Korver captures a detailed scene of the Mississippi River with two steamboats and a figure unloading a wagon behind the ornate balcony of a French Quarter building. The foreshortened view and meticulous detail captured in watercolor attest to the skill of the artist.
