signed Jno La Farge and dated 1885, l.r. watercolor and gouache on paper James L. Yarnall writes, "La Farge spent much of the year 1885 locked in litigation with his partners in the La Farge Decorative Art Company. This study of hollyhocks against a sky is one of the few works that can be dated to a period of great turmoil, financial ruin, and personal tragedy. Even with his personal and professional life in ruin, the artist mustered his best watercolor techniques and painted this study with great zeal. Stiff stylized brushstrokes at the upper right corner and near the center forcibly recall Japanese calligraphy" (Nature Vivante: The Still Lifes of John La Farge, p. 139) This watercolor will be included in the forthcoming publication of the late Henry La Farge's catalogue raisonné of the works of John La Farge, completed by James L. Yarnall and Mary A. La Farge, as number W1885.2.
