Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1742), was a celebrated statesman and philosopher in the reigns of Queen Anne, King George I and King George II. In 1712 he was created Viscount Bolingbroke but was attainted in 1715 and thereby forfeited the family estates he had inherited in Wiltshire, Surrey and Middlesex. Although these estates were restored by the King in 1725, his title remained forfeited until after his death.
John Wootton's most important patron, Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, was a close political ally of Bolingbroke, and the artist was highly favoured by Bolingbroke's generation to record their sporting activities.
