Description: Oil and mixed media on wood
USA, 2014
Jon Pestoni — American painter, b. 1969
Signed by the artist and dated in black marker on upper right, verso
Dimensions: 67 x 60 in (170.18 x 152.4cm)
Very Good condition

“Strange Strings” presents an intricate composition wherein the trace of the artist’s hand takes central command. As in much of Jon Pestoni’s work, the varied, textured surface seen here emphasizes both the materiality of the medium and the process by which it is lain onto canvas—or, in this case, wood.

Jon Pestoni (American, b. 1969)

Jon Pestoni is a Los Angeles-based painter known for his expressive abstract canvases, layering a variety of painterly techniques and modes of application, from thick drips and smears to patchy dry-brush strokes, to call attention to the processes and materials of painting itself. Experimenting with the possibilities inherent in the basic elements of painting–surface, texture, color, and line–Pestoni’s brightly colored, densely worked surfaces register the hand of the artist over time. He received his MFA from UCLA in 1996 and has exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. His work was also featured in the book “Vitamin P2” published by Phaidon in 2011. He is represented by David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles.
