C'est à dire que, si on les considère dans leur contexte (en tant qu'art) elles n'apportent aucune information sur des questions de faits. Une oeuvre d'art est une tautologie, en ce sens que c'est une présentation de l'intention de l'artiste, autrement dit que si celui-ci déclare que cette oeuvre d'art-ci est de l'art, cela signifie que c'est une définition de l'art ". Avec Self-Described and Self-Defined, nous sommes au coeur même d'une des oeuvres conceptuelles les plus importantes de la seconde partie du XXe siècle. Joseph Kosuth en proposant de redéfinir les statuts de l'art nous plonge dans un monde ou l'objectivité devient totale, où chaque lecture, chaque proposition est un défi au spectateur. Ici l'artiste s'efface devant une "séquence linguistique" qui se décrit elle-même, qui ne parle que d'elle même sans qu'aucun artifice ne vienne perturber cette apréciation. Elle constitue un système clos ou tous les éléments qui la constituent s'autoréfèrent d'une manière magistrale.
Daté 1965, Self-Described and Self-Defined s'affirme comme un condensé des propositions de Joseph Kosuth, un point ultime. Elle est aussi un formidable point de départ que l'artiste a utilisé, utilise et utilisera, notamment dans les séries célèbres que sont art as idea as idea
In Art after Philosophy, Kosuth said: "Works of Art are analytical propositions. That is, if viewed within their context - as art - they provide no information what so ever about any matter of fact. A work of art is a tautology in that it is a presentation of the artist's intention, that is, he is saying that a particular work of art is art, which means, is a definition of art." In Self-Description and Self-Defined, one finds ourself at the very heart of one of the most important conceptual work of the second half of the 20th century. In an attempt to redefine the very status of art, Kosuth here subjects the viewer into a world or experience that is becoming complete, where each letter or each proposition is a challenge to the spectator. The statement suppresses the artist identity and is self-explanatory, that speaks only to itself without any outside artifice disturbing this apreciation. The work constitutes a closed system where all the elements that constitute this self-reference have magisterial manner.
Executed in 1965, Self-Described and Self-Defined is a key work that amply characteries the artist's central artistic concerns. It is also a formidable departure point informing the artist's development, notably in the celebrated series "art as idea as idea" or "one and three".
