Description: Response written and signed by Rabbi Moshe Schick, sent to Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger, chief justice in Altona, author of the Aruch L'Ner. Yeregin [1848]. Lengthy, 4 paged response.27x22 cm. Very fine condition. Within a magnificent leather binding. The response opens with greetings to the Rabbi of Altona, in which he asks שיתן לדברי, מקום בתוך עלי 'שומר ציון' למען יצא הצדק והאמת. This refers to the Shomer Tzion HaNe'emen newsletter published by the Rabbi of Altona. The opening words end with the signature הק' משה שיק. Rabbi Moshe then continues with a lengthy halachic back and forth relating to Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger's words הרב האב"ד אלטונא יע"א להשיג על דברי אד"ו הגאון מהר"מ סופר זצ"ל.It seems that Rabbi Yaakov, author of Aruch L'ner, published a question and critique of the Chatam Sofer's words relating to halacha in an issue of his newsletter. Rabbi Moshe Schick, a devoted disciple of the Chatam Sofer, hurried to defend his teacher's words. Rabbi Moshe's halachic response in this impressive letter relates to this topic.Rabbi Moshe [Maharam] Schick was the leading disciple of the Chatam Sofer. He himself was a famed Rabbi in Yeregin and Chust. He was a prominent leader of Hungarian Jewry. He stood at the helm of the battle against the Reform movement and initiated the organization of the separate orthodox communities. Exceptionally important.
