signed and dated "Jules Goupil 1865" lower left -- oil on canvas 32 x 25 1/4 in. (81.3 x 64.1 cm.) This painting may very well date circa 1865 based on a study of the clothing worn by the two women. In fact, their attire indicates that they were dressed in the latest fashions of the day. Both the mother and the elegant visitor are wearing dresses over crinolines (hooped underskirts). The lady on our right is wrapped in a luxurious paisley shawl. Made of cashmere, it could have been manufactured in France, Great Britain, or India, where it was considered men's wear. After 1869, the bustle replaced the crinoline and the shawl gave way to the jacket, as ladies of fashion modernized their apparel. We are grateful to Dr. Valerie Steele for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
