Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) - Kate Keown, Circa 1866, albumen print, gold-toned, on the original card mount with gold border, signed and inscribed by the photographer with the title Katie and From Life, oval Colnaghi blindstamp, image 29cm diam, mount 56.5 x 45cm, with contemporary, probably the original frame, sold unframed Provenance: By descent in the Morgan family to the present vendor Literature: Lukitsh (J), Julia Margaret Cameron, 2001, p51, Cox (Julian) and Colin Ford, Julia Margaret Cameron, The Complete Photographs, 2003, No 876. Cameron's important series of 'Life Sized Heads' resulted from a period of creative experimentation in the Spring and Summer of 1866 which followed her acquisition, especially for the purpose, of a large format (15" x 12") camera with Dallmeyer Rapid Rectilinear 30" f8 lens. The Keown sisters were the children of an officer in the Royal Artillery stationed at Freshwater Bay, a field away from the Camerons' house on the Isle of Wight. Kate and her father, Thomas were photographed together in one of Cameron's earliest studies taken in 1864. The Keown children sat for Cameron, in many different guises in the twelve years to 1872, the year in which the Camerons left for Ceylon.
