The Hon. Frank Charteris (1844-70) was the eldest son of Lord Elcho. The heir to a respected title and considerable properties in Scotland, he studied at Balliol College, Oxford between 1864 and 1867. A promising future was cut short in July 1870 when Charteris died as the result of an accidentally self-inflicted bullet wound.
