Membre fondateur avec notamment Constant et Corneille du groupe COBRA en 1948, Appel et ses amis s'opposent alors aux peintres abstraits, descendants de Stijl, et aux peintres abstraits dits géométriques, et exaltent le dessin d'enfant et le dessin de fou. L'enfant est d'ailleurs un des thèmes qui reveindra le plus souvent dans l'oeuvre d'Appel. L'enfance, le jeu, la violence, le bricolage, autant de sujets qui font alors scandale dans la sphère artistique. En se tournant vers l'enfant, Appel rencontre en chemin l'animal et avec beaucoup de joie de vivre, de liberté, de bonheur de peindre et parfois de violence, il développe tout un bestiaire fantastique d'animaux "dénaturés", souvent imaginaires.
Coïncidant avec son arrivée à Paris en septembre 1950, son travail subit d'importants changements: "A présent, je peins des tâches plus grandes, des couleurs infiniment repassées l'une sur l'autre, je gratte et je passe de nouvelles tâches de couleurs jusqu'à ce qu'il ne reste qu'un grand plan concentré et lié à la fois, tout à coup un rouge ou un jaune vifs et la toile et l'être se confondent."
Dans Deux oiseaux sur fond de fleurs, 1951, on retrouve ces formes animales pleines d'innocence et de vitalité combinées avec une palette de couleurs d'une extraordinaire intensité. A ce titre, cette oeuvre est un remarquable condensé des recherches de l'époque COBRA d'avant son installation parisienne et de ce travail instinctif et spontané sur la couleur qui caractérise aussi le travail d'Appel.

A founding member of the COBRA group in 1948 with, notably, Constant and Corneille, Appel and his friend were supposed to abstract painters, the heirs of the Stijl and so-called geometric abstract painters, and exalted childish and fantasy drawing. The child is also the theme which were scandalous at that time in the art world. By turning towards the child, Appel came across the subject of animals and with a great deal f joy and freedom, happiness to paint and sometimes violence, he developed a whole fantastic bestiary of distorted, often imaginary, animals.
At the same time he moved to Paris in September 1950, his work underwent important changes: 'At present I paint marks, bigger marks, colours overlapping one another infinitely, I scratch and I make new coloured marks until there remains nothing but a single large area which is both concentrated and linked, where suddenly a bright red or yellow and the canvass and the being combine.
In Two birds on a background of flowers, 1951, we find animals forms full of innocence and vitality combined with a palette of colours of an extraordinary intensity. In this respect, this work is a remarkable condensation of the research during the COBRA period before he moved to Paris and of this instinctive and spontaneous work on colour which also characterize the work of Appel.
