THREE PLANTS signed; signed and inscribed "Toronto" on the frame on the reverse and titled on a label on the reverse oil on canvas 61 by 78.7 cm. 24 by 31 in. Nakamura was a member of Painters Eleven, but as a painter always stood slightly apart from them. His work consistently dealt with the structure underlying things, whether it was representational to a degree, as Three Plants of the 1950s, or whether it was abstract, as with his string paintings and block towers. Equally remarkable was Nakamura's practice to push all these (and other) kinds of subjects and manners of painting along at the same time. He is increasingly regarded as one of the most innovative members of Painters Eleven.
