Description: Bronze with gold and silver plating. Bust of Melpomene, the muse of drama and tragic song, the leaves of the tendril wreath gilt, the stele signed "L.Kley" on the reverse. Chiselled brass seal surface with mirrored monogram "L" underneath the Bavarian royal crown. Overall height 12.5 cm, weight 368 g. Melpomene (the one who sings) invigorates man with her song, thus giving him strength to withstand the storms of life. On the stairway of Herrenchiemsee Palace, King Ludwig II also had several muses, among them Melpomene, placed next to the statue of Minerva. Louis Kley, French sculptor, student of J.M. Lequien in Paris, presented his works in numerous exhibitions in the Paris Salon and was renowned for his delicate and richly detailed bronze and gypsum sculptures. He reached his artistic height during the Art Nouveau period.
