Lot 201: KIPLING, Rudyard (1865-1936). The Day's Work. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1898. 8vo. (Occasional light spotting). Publisher's blue cloth, gilt (rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: Wynnard Hooper (bookplate).  FIRST EDITION. [With]: ALS by Kipling dated Oct. 11. 98  [to Wynnard Hooper], loosely inserted, with mailing envelope pasted onto FEP. "Dear Wyn, You're a brick to like the Day's Work and specially "William". No, she isn't Art altogether but she is grateful and comforting which, as I grown older, I am at times inclined to believe is a dee (?) sight better. I want Mackenzie Wallace's head in a paper-basket for I believe it was along of his pro-Muscovite feelings that my little Natural History poem about bears didn't come out in the Times. Now like son (?), I am waiting on the upshot of Fashoda. When I was with the Fleet last month at Bantry they, too, were waiting - hopefully with their tongues out. I think we are ready - at least as ready as we're ever likely to be. Yours always, Ruddy". (Corner chipped with loss (fragment still in situ, not affecting the text). With five other works by Kipling, including: The Naulahka: A Story of West and East (London, 1912), Limits and Renewals (London, 1932),  A fleet in Being (London, 1898), France at War (London, 1916) and Soldier Tales (London, 1896).
