Description: KIPLING, RUDYARD
The Years Between
. London: Methuen, [1919]. An interesting advance proof copy of the first English edition, with several corrections in Kipling's hand and notes by F.N. Doubleday, also bound in is a typed sheet with the text of the dedication before typesetting (see note). Finely bound in full crimson morocco gilt by The French Binders, the covers paneled in blind and with a leaf motif stamped in gilt, the spine with gilt lettering and raised bands. Spine lightly dulled, a first edition copy of the book as published is included in the lot.
The poems collected here are considered some of Kipling's darkest. The title refers to the years between the South African War and the end of World War I, the war which claimed the life of Kipling's son, John (the sad poem My Boy Jack is written for him). This proof copy contains several corrections by Kipling and the text of the dedication before typesetting. The dedication poem,"To the Seven Watchmen," is often overlooked in Kipling's works but summarized his feelings about the destruction of the war: "Seven Watchmen sitting in a tower/Watching what had become of mankind..."
