CATALOGUE NOTE

In the early years of the 20th century Konstantin Korovin travelled widely and the landscapes of the places he visited are subject matter of some of his best Impressionist works from this time. Particularly prevalent in his oeuvre are views of the Moscow suburbs, Parisian scenes, views of provincial France and the Crimean coast.

From 1910-1917 Korovin spent the summer at his family dacha in Gurzuf, a beautiful town on the Russian coast of the Black Sea, a popular holiday resort for Russians. He affecionately named his Gurzuf villa "Salambo" after the Alexander Gorsky's ballet of the same name, having worked on designs for the 1910 production. His dacha attracted some of the most distinguished cultural figures of the day, including Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Maxim Gorky and Fedor Chaliapin with whom he collaborated.

The bright, sunny landscapes of Gurzuf were an inspiration to him. In contrast to his dark and busy street scenes of the French capital, the atmosphere of these works is relaxed and calm. Summer in Gurzuf is a rare masterpiece from this rare and sought-after period.
