Description: Oak, the table top has inlaid squares of alternating lengthwise and crosswise grain, with a coloured intarsia of a Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 with Oak Leaves above the year "1943" on the left side, and an intarsia en suite of the U-Boat War Badge (with diamonds?) on the right. The supporting structure has two drawers and a wedged crossbar, dimensions 181 x 91.5 cm. Height ca. 75 cm. Made by order of Grand Admiral Dönitz in the carpentry shop of the 22nd U-Boat Flotilla, which Bleichrodt took over a little later from Wolfgang Lüth. When the Bleichrodt family was evacuated from Gotenhafen on the tender "Weichsel", the table went with them to Kiel. Heinrich Bleichrodt joined the navy on 1 April 1933 as a sea cadet, served on the "Gorch Fock" and the heavy cruiser "Admiral Hipper" before he transferred to submarines in October 1939. As commander of the U-48, briefly the U-67, and the U-109 between September 1940 and January 1943, he sank 27 ships for a total of just under 160,000 gross tons. After his first two combat voyages, he received the Knight's Cross in October 1940, and then the Oak Leaves in October 1942. At the time he was tactical instructor for the 2nd U-Boat Instructional Division, and in November 1943 he was promoted Lieutenant Commander.
