l Armin Carl Hansen (1886-1957) northeaster signed Armin Hansen A.N.A., l.r. oil on canvas 36 by 48in. (91.4 by 121.9cm.) Painted circa 1930. Born in San Francisco in 1886, Armin Carl Hansen received his first instruction in art from his father, Herman W. Hansen, the well know painter of frontier life in the old West (see lot 198). From 1903-06 he attended the California School of Design, and then departed for Europe where he spent two years studying in Stuttgart, GermaN0. He also traveled to Munich, Paris, Holland and Belgium, where he was offered a job on a Belgian sailing ship. Hansen spent four years working on the ship and acquired a profound respect for the sea and the quiet heroism of the sailors and fisherman who daily braved its primal forces. Upon his return to the United States in 1912, Hansen settled in Monterey, California. Much of the rest of his life was spent painting seascapes, coastal views and scenes of the fishing industry along the Monterey Peninsula. "Every move I have made and everything I have done," he is quoted as saying, "has always been to go back to the sea and to the men who give it romance. I love them all" (Jean Stern et al., Impressions of California: Early Currents in Art 1850-1930, Irvine California, 1996, p. 71).
