Description: 1 November 1898 55 MEUSE. VAUCOULEURS. Action de F500. yellow, black. #1000. No 994. Folds and repaired tear at the top border. Also repaired splits at the bottom. Ornate border with several statues. Originally founded by Martin Pierson in 1860 as an atelier to sculpture statues and funeral monuments from stone. In 1865, he founded the Institut Catholique de Vaucouleurs to produce religious statues made from plaster. After 1870, a painter (Alphonse Bentz) and sculptor (Demoisson) joined him and the factory expanded, opening a sales office in Paris and selling its religious artworks all over France. Renamed Union Internationale Artistique in 1881.
