Description: We proudly offer this next lot of a fine group of antique English flow blue semi porcelain items, featuring a Spectacular prime collectible, properly stamped, Art Nouveau Gr-B body style, large 12.5" covered vegetable tureen, in the valuable Haddon pattern, by the fabled firm of W. H. Grindley ca. 1904 - 1910. This pattern showcases a brilliant and rich Cobalt geometric & blossom theme finished in the Gr-B beaded & scalloped rim. The Gr-B Patent was USA applied in 1902, and the first retail sales were ca. 1903 in both the Sears Roebuck & Co. catalog + outlets. The Gr-B body style was produced for almost a decade in (14) separate renowned Grindley flow blue patterns as Alton, Astral, Beaufort, Florida, Girton, Keele, Lorne, Melbourn, and Waverly. William H. VanBuskirk values this splayed footed tureen in Excellent condition at $300 to $400, and other notable authors concur. The W. H. Grindley Co. was renowned for its innovative, deep flow blue art nouveau patterns, distinctive body styles, and brilliant Ivory base. In the latter Victorian through Edwardian periods (1890 - 1920), W. H. Grindley produced no less than 162 desirable patterns in flow blue, flow mulberry, and slate blue alone. The W.H Grindley Co was founded in 1880 by William Harry Grindley at the Newfield Pottery in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, operating until 1891, when the company moved to the new and larger Woodland Pottery. Grindley initially produced Earthenware and Ironstone China - particularly for the Canadian, United States, South American and Australian markets, but came to its greatest fame with the production of Art Nouveau Flow Blue Semi Porcelain, from the 1890s through the 1920s. W.H. Grindley was the most prolific potter of English semi - porcelain flow blue in the latter Victorian and early Edwardian eras, producing no less than (162) dynamic patterns in flow blue, flow mulberry and slate blue, offered in (15) separate body styles, each being RD registered (British) or patented (USA) at different times. The world globe and steamer are some of the latter Victorian periods most recognizable & respected marks. With Flow Blue semi porcelain as its cornerstone, Grindley produced their gorgeous art nouveau patterns on various tableware lines from 1894 well into the 1930s. The Tunstall signature was used prior to 1891 with the England as a post McKinley Tariff Act designation and the LTD. added in 1925. The business was purchased by Alfred Clough Ltd. in 1960, and renamed Grindley of Stoke (Ceramics) Ltd. in 1978.
