Description: LUCHIZM' [RAYISM]. MOSCOW, 1913
8vo (150 x 118mm.), 6 illustrations by Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova, original printed wrappers, wrappers a little soiled, backstrip repaired
NOTE
Rayism was an offshoot of Cubism and was one of the first non-objective styles of Russian painting. Larionov claimed to have painted his first Rayist work in 1909 but it s usually acccepted that it was in 1912 that he developed this style, quickly adopted by Goncharova. Rayism was an abstract style of painting that merged rhythm, motion and light with Primitivist tendencies. Larionov called it Rayism after the effect created when light rays refracted from a surface causing a powerful expressive force that shattered the image.
