This motorcycle is an original factory build for the 1978 series of Coppa Laverda. It has been ridden by Italian race driver Paolo Ferretti (1866-1938), and it was the winning motorcycle of the Championship in the season 1978. The motorcycle is in very good condition, all components are original, it has never been modified or restored. Stored and conserved in the collection for decade.
The Italian motorcycle manufacturer Laverda began production of the Laverda 500, a light-weight but strong bike with a half liter engine, in 1976. The motorbikes had a performance of 44 hp (32 kW) and meant an extension of the company's range. A special version with a reduced cubic capacity of 350 ccm was developed for the Italian market. Other products were the racing versions Laverda 500 Formula and Laverda 500 SFC. The Laverda 500 Formula is a motorbike with an air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves with bucket tappers per cylinder, 2 x 32 mm DellOrto carburetor and electronic ignition. In comparison with the series models, the 500 Formula had a reduced weight and were more powerful. The first series Laverda 500 Formula 1, built as of 1978 (also called Montjuic), had an output of 52 hp (38 kW) at 9500 rpm and an empty weight of 154 kg, the second series Laverda 500 Formula 2, built from 1979 on, had a performance of 60 hp (44 kW) and reached maximum speeds of more than 200 km/h. Up until 1981 the 100 bikes produced were used in the Italian cup Formula 500.
