MORNING signed with initials; titled and inscribed "In Old Quebec" in an unknown hand on the reverse oil on board 20.3 by 25.4 cm. 8 by 10 in. Harris made his first trip to the Laurentians area of Quebec in 1908, his first sketching venture into a Northern Canadian landscape. He used a limited range of muted warm and cool earth tones with strong brushwork meant to show the rugged character of the pre-Columbian shield. After viewing contemporary Scandinavian paintings in Buffalo in 1913, a second trip to the Laurentians with J.E.H. MacDonald produced works that were brighter in colour and have a bolder design.
