*Lazzaro Bastiani (1425-circa 1512) PENTECOST oil on panel 33 by 49 1/2 in. 83.8 by 125.7cm. Lazzaro Bastiani was an important member of the artistic community in Venice in the late 1400s and early 1500s. His career stretched over sixty years and the influence of such artists as Andrea del Castagno and Gentile Bellini can be seen at different periods in his work. He is traditionally said to have been the teacher of Vittorio Carpaccio. One of Bastiani's most important commissions was the cycle representing the relics of the Holy Cross for the Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista (circa 1495; the large canvas depicting the Donation of the Relic of the True Cross is now in the Accademia, Venice). The present painting is thought to be a work from late in Bastiani's career.
