Description: Le Hay. and Charles de Ferriol. Recueil de cent estampes représentant differentes Nations du Levant, second edition, title, 8 engraved ff. of text (including the additional f. 'Anecdotes de l'ambassade de M. de Ferriol'), 102 engraved plates (3 double-page) and a leaf of music, lightly browned, 2 water-stains to title and Preface f., short tear at foot of 'Mariage Turc' within platemark, a few spots, contemporary calf, richly gilt spine in compartments and with red morocco label, spine ends and corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, folio, [Atabey 430; cf. Blackmer 591], Paris, chez L.Cars, 1714 [i.e. 1715]. ***The plates are based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis de Ferriol, French ambassador to the Porte. In 1707 he commissioned Jean Baptiste van Mour to paint one hundred pictures of various officials and races in their costumes. The paintings complete Ferriol helped Le Hay to publish the prints. Later, Laurent Cars bought the plates from the original publisher Jacques Collombat and produced the present edition..
