Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 21 1/2 x 29 3/8 in./54.6 x 74.6 cm Lautrec's most arresting poster was commissioned for his hometown newspaper, to publicize Les Drames de Toulouse, a novelized account of three sensational moments in the city's history. This scene comes from the Calas case, in the 1760s: an extreme tale of family estrangement - wrongful accusations, assumed murder, suicide, religious persecution, and redemption that arrived too late. After the fervor over his 1891 image for the Moulin Rouge, the public began demanding all of Lautrec's other poster designs. This is the second edition of the image, printed in a limited pressing of 30 impressions to satisfy that demand. One of these 30 impressions is owned by MoMA. Provenance: Collection of Herbert Schimmel.
