Description: LEGROS, PARIS
A FINE 22-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, no visible serial number,
circa 1800 with later conversion to percussion from flintlock, probably by the maker, with blued 30in. barrels (finish faded), the top of the left hand barrel signed in large gold-filled script ''LEGROS'', the right barrel ''A PARIS'' in a similar script, gold band at muzzle, white-metal blade fore-sight bisected lengthways by a gilt arrow device inlet to the rib, deeply struck oval French proof marks of a crown over ''HR'' to both breech-blocks, engraved brushed bright top-tang featuring a depiction of a harpy and a portrait of a male within the carved sighting groove, engraved drum and nipple conversions, the radiused bevel edged locks engraved with partial borders of tulips and featuring an eagle above a recumbant rabbit on the left lock-tail and a lion on the right, both locks signed ''LEGROS A PARIS'' below a floral flourish and retaining the rear half of the pan drains at fences, carved and engraved hammers featuring male portraits within a running vine of tulip flowers, finely chequered walnut half-stock carved with floral decoration around the top-tang and a realistic depiction of a wild boars head to the base of the grip, raised cheek-piece with gadrooned border, engraved iron furniture, the capped heel-plate featuring masks of wild beasts blowing hunting horns, the pillared trigger-guard bow with a hunter and his dog within a woodland setting and a vase finial, a further eagle and stag engraved to the complex fore-end cap, turned ramrod thimbles and probable original worm-ended ramrod with gilded tip, fitted with iron swivels.
