Description: Washington, George; [Vardill, John; Randolph, John]. LETTERS FROM GENERAL WASHINGTON TO SEVERAL OF HIS FRIENDS, IN JUNE AND JULY, 1776. Philadelphia: Federal Press, 1795. 8vo. [6], 9-44 pp. In later boards, boards detached and chipped, contents with some patchy foxing and a few leaves with closed marginal tears. Good. ******************************* Senator Albert W. Hawkes' copy with presentation card laid in. "Spurious letters first published in London in 1777, variously attributed to John Vardill ('Poplicol'") and to John Randolph" (Evans.) The spurious letters, first printed for a British audience, attempt to portray Washington as being doubtful regarding the Patriot cause. [Evans 28969; Sabin 101741]
