Louis Chalon, French, French, 1866-1916, Tannhauser, a patinated bronze figural group, depicting Tannhauser standing up in medieval clothes, the naked Venus next to him trying to seduce him, on oval marble base with an identifying brass tag. 25 5/8" high, 20" wide. Signed in the bronze L. Chalon. The sculpture shows the moment where Tannhauser tries to escape from the Venusberg in vain while Venus uses all her charms to keep him under her spell. He finally manages to get away by means of an image of the Virgin Mary. The legend is widely known by the opera Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner.
