Shepherd Gallery, "Viewpoints: European Sculpture 1875-1925," New York, 1991, pp. 30-31, cat. no. 6, illus. The life-size patinated plaster model of 'The First Funeral' (now at the Depot de la Ville de Paris), won the Medal of Honor at the Salon of 1878. The State then commissioned a marble for the Hotel de Ville (now in the gardens of the Institute Psychiatrique) which was exhibited at the Salon of 1883 and the Expositions Universelle of 1889 and 1900. The popular group of Adam and Eve carrying Abel was an allegorical representation of the lives lost during the Franco-Prussian war. The bronzes cast by Thiebaut Freres were made between 1878 and 1885.
