More About this Item

Description: Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 180 to 220 CE. A lovely small alabaster bust of a bearded man with thick, curly hair on his head and face. His face is naturalistic and has a rounded nose and large, sensitive eyes. In the Classical World, small busts were often made as copies of larger statues, usually ones displayed in public spaces, to be placed in the household. This bust probably depicts someone of high status. The facial hair helps us date it; Roman emperors were clean shaven until the Emperior Hadrian, who grew one, according to Plutarch, to hide scars on his face, although he may also have been inspired by Greek style. This fashion was mirrored by other men for just a brief period in Roman history. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.9" L x 1.8" W x 4.75" H (4.8 cm x 4.6 cm x 12.1 cm)
