Description: Amalie Hassenpflug (1800-1871) was the sister of Ludwig Hassenpflug. In 1822 he married Lotte Grimm, the sister of the fairy-tale collectors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and the painter Ludwig Emil Grimm. After his studies in München, Kassel, he set up a studio in 1817 and began work as a freelance painter, initially painting portraits of family members and friends. In his own catalogue raisonné (Bad Homburg v. d. H., Verwaltung der Staatlichen Schlösser und Gärten, Inv. Nr. 1.6.46, S. 16), he mentions for the year 1817 or 1818 ''painted in oil the likeness of Ludw. Hassenpflug, ½ figure, liefesize, as with his sisters Amalie and Marie''. This surely refers to our painting.
The whereabouts of this painting was unknown up till now, and only one black and white photograph was available which showed only a detail of the painting: the edge, which showed slight differences of colour and discolouration had evidently been covered by a frame so that the signature and date from Ludwig Emil Grimm was up until now unknown.
We would like to thank Dr. Vera Leuschner, Kassel for her kind help with the cataloguing.
