xx, 208 pp. With a small slip of printed paper, printing a poem by Dunbar titled "Temptation" tipped in at rear hinge. Introduction by W.D. Howells. With portrait frontispiece, tissue guard. 16.5x10.5 cm (6½x4¼") original olive green cloth, gilt-decorated and lettered front cover and spine, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. First Edition.

With two autograph poems, signed by Paul L. Dunbar, laid in. Each poem is published (in other works). The first autograph poem is 3 pp., and titled "Lover's Lane" and it is signed at the end. The other is a 1 pp. poem titled "Love", signed at the top, and dated at the bottom corner "Cosmo. May, 98." This poem possibly originally written for and published in an 1898 issue of The Cosmopolitan Magazine. It also appears later in a compilation of poetry. Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) was the first African American poet to garner critical acclaim. His poetry, essays, novels, and short stories focused on the struggles faced by African Americans to gain equality. His work gained respect from his literary peers and a national audience. Autograph items of his are quite scarce and important to the history of African American poets. BAL 4918.
