A TAWNY KNOLL signed; titled on two labels on the reverse oil on paper laid down on linen 91.4 by 60.9 cm. 36 by 24 in. When Lawren Harris and the members of the Group of Seven inspired Emily Carr to return to painting in 1927, they gave her the courage to express the spiritual force she felt in British Columbia's awesome rainforests. She responded with paintings, such as A Tawny Knoll, which catch the powerful surge of vitality she sensed in the landscape of her native province, second nature to her from her travels throughout its forests, along its rivers and coasts, and among its magnificent mountains. At her strongest, Carr was able to achieve an iconic quality in her work, where universal values and symbols are evident.
