AN EXCEPTIONAL 16-BORE PERCUSSION OVER-UNDER SPORTING-RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1850, with etched ribbon-damascus 25 1/4in. round multi-grooved rifled barrels, the etched background to the patterning deliberately darkened for effect, the bottom barrel with straight rifling for use with shot if required, the top-side at breech signed in gold ''MATHIAS NOWOTNY IN WIEN'', dove-tailed silver-bladed fore-sight mounted on an etched damascus circular base, bright blued dove-tailed rear-sight with polished standing notch and additional folding leaf mounted on a similar base to the fore-sight, gold line and arabesque band inlet at breech-end, carved symmetrical percussion fences and snails, engraved platinum vents, the area between the nipple-bosses engraved with scrolls and chamois in a mountainous setting, the top-tang further engraved with borders and acanthus scrolls, the top section featuring a hunter with his kill above an applied silver shield, back-action locks of complex shape and fully engraved with borders, acanthus scroll and game-scenes of stags and hunting dogs, the right lock signed in a banner ''NOWOTNY'', the left ''IN WIEN'', both locks retained at the tails by blind screws engraved as flowers, fully scroll engraved dolphin headed hammers, scroll engraved swinging external hammer-block safes forwards of both hammers, all engraving throughout with background darkened for effect, chequered walnut half-stock with carved raised cheek-piece, gamescene engraved iron patch-box to the right hand side with scroll engraved arabesque hinge, border and gamescene engraved iron heel-plate (traces of original blue), borderline and gamescene engraved blued trigger-guard bow featuring wild boar being hunted by dogs, trigger-guard tang with carved, pierced and scrolled horn cover, the rear of tang threaded to accept an auxilliary ball-starter or palm-guard (present), button swivel to underside of butt, broad swivel to underside of barrel on a similar damascus mount to the sights, radiused left hand damascus rib, the right sunken and fitted with three damascus thimbles for the original brass mounted ramrod, the tip threaded for the starter, strong amount of original finish throughout
