Magnificent Original Cased Luftwaffe Model 30 Drilling with Case and Accessories
Description:
This is just an exceptional, all original and probably one of the finest examples of this highly desirable Luftwaffe Model 30 Survival Drilling manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Son during World War II. This high quality commercial drilling was issued to Luftwaffe aircraft assigned to operations in North Africa as tropical survival equipment. The combination shotgun/rifle has 12-gauge side-by-side shotgun barrels and a 9.3X74 rifle barrel. The barrels have a matted rib with 100 meter rifle rear sight activated by the barrel selector and silver tip front sight. The action has double shotgun triggers; the forward, single set trigger fires the rifle barrel. Sling swivels are fitted to the rifle barrel and stock. The barrels have a high quality, rust blue finish and the receiver, trigger guard and barrel tangs have a casehardened finish with exceptionally vivid casecolors. The stock and forend are oil-finished European walnut with finely checkered panels on both sides. The stock has a checkered pistol grip with a steel casehardened grip cap with a small European style oval cheekpiece with a black plastic serrated buttplate embossed with the Sauer "SS" monogram. The breech, sides of the receiver, trigger guard, tangs, pistol grip cap and screws are decorated with tasteful and restrained scroll engraving. The Sauer "SS" monogram is stamped on the underside of the receiver. The legend: "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL:" is located on the sides of the receiver and on the edges of the shotgun barrels. "KRUPP- LAUFSTAHL" is stamped on both shotgun barrels and on the left side of the rifle barrel. The rifle caliber "9.3X74.R" is engraved in an oval panel on the barrel rib behind the folding rear sight. The underside of both shotgun barrels are stamped with the gauge, "12/65" and the commercial "Eagle/N" proofmark. The left side of the rifle breech is stamped with the caliber "9.3X74R", the "Eagle/N" commercial proof, a Sauer proof and "141", which should correspond to Jan 1941 as the year of manufacture. A Luftwaffe "Stick Eagle/2" acceptance mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel lug. The serial number "337384" is stamped on the rifle barrel beneath the forend and on the edge of the left receiver rail. The inside of the forend latch is stamped with the partial serial number "384". All of the visible serial numbers match. The right edge of the frame rail is stamped with the "SS" monogram and the "Eagle/N" proofmark. Luftwaffe Eagle and Swastika insignia is boldly stamped on the right side of the stock near the butt and on the right shotgun barrel at the breech. The drilling is complete with the original aluminum case. The case has a leather luggage type handle and two latches. The inside of the case has wooden partitions with felt covers and the inside of the lid is stenciled with a list of contents. The case is complete with: (1) a leather sling, (still in the original cardboard sleeve), and (2) a black cardboard box containing the cleaning equipment that is part of the original kit and contains: (1) three-piece wooden cleaning rod with handle, (2) one fiber shotgun bore brush, (3) one metal shotgun bore brush, (4) one cloth shotgun bore swab, (5) fiber, steel and cloth rifle bore brushes, swab and brass jag, (6) an oil bottle and (7) cotton cleaning material. Herman Goring was an avid hunter and made sure that the Luftwaffe had the finest equipment. The Model 30 Survival Drilling is typical of the high quality flight gear provided to Luftwaffe air crew early in WWII.
