G(uer). Amst., L'honoré & fils, 1748. 2 in 1 vol. (12), cxix, (8), 208; (2), 231, (5) pp. Cont. mottled cf. w. raised bands, richly dec. gilt back & red edges. (Top of spine chipped, corners bumped/dam., blank piece of half-ti. cut off, slightly browned in places). First edition. Benoît de Maillet (1656-1738), French diplomat, wrote most of this work while serving as general consul at Cairo. Important work on the diminution of the sea and the expansion of the continents, presented under the name of a fictitious Indian philosopher ('de Maillet' spelled backwards). - DSB IX, p. 26ff: "This fundamental work, in essence an ultraneptunian theory of th earth, was based largely on his geological field observations made during extensive travels throughout Egypt and other Mediterranean countries." - Sabin, 43892: "It is supposed to have suggested to Mr. Darwin his celebrated theory." - First edition.
