MALEVICH, Kazimir Severinovich (1878-1933). Autograph manuscript with diagrams, 'Suprematizm. Momenty ego Razvitia' [Suprematism. Stages of its Development], n.p., n.d. [after 1923], 3 pages, folio (silked, causing slight roll at edges). THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW VISUAL LANGUAGE. In this important document, subtitled 'the predominance of pure, non-objective, ideology-free art', Malevich outlines the stylistic evolution of his radical idea: from the fundamental 'Black Square', one of the most important creations of Russian art in the 20th century, through its development into more elaborate compositions. Malevich illustrates, with 46 diagrams, the interaction between the elements of Suprematism; he describes the transformation of shape, and contrasts static and dynamic compositions. Touching on the qualities evoked by the interplay of form and colour, three stages of colour-use are delineated, Black, Colourful and White, and all forms are shown to be derived from the square and circle. Malevich introduced Suprematism in 1915 with the first public showing of the 'Black Square' painting at the '0.10' exhibition in St. Petersburg. His rejection of representational art marked a turning point and dominated the avant-garde in Russia, and had a significant impact on abstract art in Europe. The artists saw Suprematism as an end to old conventions, a rediscovery of pure art, strictly aesthetic, concerned only with form, and free from any social meaning.
