A flying angel, after Raphael ( recto ); A mountainous landscape with houses ( verso ) pen and brown ink 4 3/8 x 71/2 in. (110 x 190 mm.) PROVENANCE Two unidentified collection marks. Carl Julius Kollmann; Dresden, 24 September 1877, lot 26, according to an inscription 'Gir-le 24 7be - 77 53 no.26 2x feres' ( verso ). NOTES Dr. Konrad Oberhuber kindly confirmed the attribution of this drawing to the previous owner. The angel is copied from Raphael's fresco of the Sibyls and angels in the Church of Santa Maria della Pace, Rome, painted about 1514 for Agostino Chigi. Raimondi arrived in Rome around 1508, coming from Bologna, Venice and Florence. From that period until Raphael's death in 1520 he worked as the artist's main engraver. It was thanks to the work of Raimondi that Raphael's work became so rapidly known throughout Europe. The rather tight and regular handling of the pen, with areas such as the left hand and the hair more freely drawn, resembles a number of early drawings by Raimondi reproduced in K. Oberhuber, 'Marcantonio Raimondi, die Bologneser Anf„nge und die erste r”mische Periode', Humanismus in Bologna, 1490-1510, exhib. cat., Vienna, Graphische Sammlung Albertina, 1988, pp. 51-88.
