Notes: This image was used in a Fortune magazine feature story on the Port of New York, appearing in the July 1939 issue. Bourke-White recounted in her autobiography, 'The bridge was under construction then and breathtakingly beautiful, with no floor built yet but with the gossamerlike cables gracefully strung from bank to bank. I had been waiting for just this phase of the construction, and it was my bad luck that it came in midwinter on a zero day. . . I spent the morning perched high over the ice-flecked Hudson River on the mighty cables, which on closer acquaintance, I found not to be gossamer at all but thick as tree trunks. . .'
