(American 1891-1965) Cloud Bank #4, Alternate title "Variation on Theme Four" Circa 1931 Oil on canvas Signed lower left "MARVIN CONE" 17 7/8" x 22 1/8" ProvenanceMarvin Cone Mrs. Worth Averill, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Thence by decent through the family Exhibited: Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Coe College, "Paintings by Marvin Cone", April 1931, no. 9 Literature:Joseph S. Czestochowski, "Marvin D. Cone: Art as Self Portrait" Cedar Rapids, Iowa 1989, cat. no. 245, page 90, illustrated. The offered lot was executed in the same year as Cone's stunning painting titled "Prelude", now held in the collection of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. Like Cone's "Prelude", the colors in the offered painting are subtle and evocative in their suggestion of light, and a complex layering of forms gives depth to the sliver of earth dotted with trees upon rolling hills. While the painting is without doubt a majestic statement about nature, and in particular the expansive Midwest landscape, it is also a very personal expression of solitude and tranquility. Although this insight was Cone's link to both his nineteenth-century landscapist predecessors and his regionalist contemporaries, "Cloud Bank #4, has a very fresh and clearly modern perspective.
